A view of the pyramid of Deng Kur, built by the Nuer prophet Ngundeng (d.1906) at the end of
the 19th century, and added to by his son. An important political symbol of Nuer resistance to
colonial rule, the pyramid was eventually blown-up by the administration in 1928 on the orders
of colonial officer Percy Coriat, shortly after he took this photograph.
